Center for Access and Transition
The University of Cincinnati’s Center for Access and Transition (CAT) provides specialized academic instruction and intense academic advising for students who are required to complete preparatory work prior to transitioning into a degree granting program. The Center’s faculty specialists provide instruction in mathematics, oral communication, reading, study skills and writing, all supplemented by expert academic tutoring.
Since CAT’s inception in September 2004, nearly half of the students admitted to UC through this program have successfully transitioned and remain “degree bound.” The Center maintains formal transition agreements with a majority of UC Colleges and helps students negotiate transfers to the others. CAT's sole purpose is to help students be accepted into a program from which they will successfully graduate with a degree.
CAT Challenges
Donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations are essential to helping the Center achieve its mission. The Center’s focus on enabling students to fulfill program requirements and develop sufficient proficiency to transition within one academic year, requires small class sizes, the support of a dedicated cadre of faculty and staff, and appropriate instructional materials.
All donors to the Center for Access and Transition are recognized through the Friends of the Center, and will benefit from the following:
- A subscription to the Center’s newsletter, UC Achieves
- Invitations to lectures and events
- The personal satisfaction of knowing you have made a genuine impact in the lives of some of the most needy students
Funding Opportunities
The CAT Scholarship Fund
The Scholarship Fund serves students who are achieving academically, but are in need of money for education costs not covered by their financial aid or income.
The Faculty Development Fund
The Faculty Development Fund provides money necessary for CAT faculty in all departments to expand and develop their teaching and research skills by attending professional conferences and workshops.
The CAT Reading Room Fund
The Center for Access and Transition received a grant to open an on-site Reading Room stocked with a wide variety of fiction books. The Reading Room was designed to increase CAT students’ access to books, add volume to their self-selected reading and contribute to their development as readers. Donated funds will allow the Center to buy books and maintain the Reading Room.
